Silly Observations – Germany part 1 (Roads)
(By Tracey- September 11, 2019)

Here are my silly observations on Germany, these are road based.

  • Chevrons on steep corners are red and white. I suspect John may be a little red/green colour blind! Lots of steep corners have bushes behind the signs.
  • Road signs on non-motorway roads are yellow – with my British background it feels like I’m permanently driving through road works
  • Lots of places are 30K speed limit, which feels very slow
  • The speed limit is “walking pace” through housing estates
  • Many towns have a slower speed limit at night to reduce traffic noise
  • Motorways sometimes have a higher speed limit at night
  • Lots of motorways have speed limits but where they don’t you get an amazing draft from cars that go “tonning” by. (Bertie is over 3.5t and therefore always has a speed limit).
  • There is no Google street view, I understand the privacy issues, but we use street view all the time to check the route that the tom tom has suggested, particularly if it takes us down country lanes.
  • People stick up kinder (children) signs outside their houses, These are cutouts of a kid with a ball or similar and basically are to say slow down
  • Drivers stop for you, at zebra crossing and when you are on a cycle track that crosses the road
  • Cycle lanes are everywhere and these have right of ways at junctions
