The bed in Bertie

Beds
(By Tracey- August 29, 2018)

I’ve had a few comments that I must look forward to a proper bed, so I decided to write a little about motorhome beds.

It was a deciding factor in buying the van. I knew that to work and travel I had to have a decent night’s sleep. You get all sorts of formats for beds in motorhomes. The first choice is a fixed permanent bed or one you make up every night. To be honest I wasn’t concerned about this, as the chances were we would leave it made up all the time except when we had visitors and my first choice would have been a back sitting area that made to a bed. We didn’t get that, it’s an “English” style and we got a German left hand drive van. Once onto fixed beds you get a whole array of styles. You get beds called “french beds” that take up part of the back and are next to the bathroom, these are popular. But the beds are narrow and the person next to the wall has to climb out over the 2nd person. You get island beds, these are narrow but have a little walk way down each side of the bed. You get traverse beds that go across the van but take up less space as they’re only between 5 and 6 foot wide. Once again you have to climb out over people. You also get single beds. Something I didn’t consider!

We went for one where the bed is fixed and you get out at the bottom. It’s above the garage so it’s high. There are 3 steps up to it. You can have it as 2 * 3 foot singles or you can build the bed over the steps making the bed well over 7 foot wide, but a reasonable climb to get into it. We have it made in a double all the time. We are still fit enough that climbing is not an issue. It is really really comfy and with a memory foam topper. sleep is never far away (except when work gets me down!) . Given the size of the bed you have enough room to get away from your partner’s snoring, heat and anything else or you can get close enough as the wish takes you. The top of the mattress can be propped up to recline (like hospital beds). My friend who lounged in it for a few days did complain it was short but she had the bed reclined and was trying to lay flat in the space that was left! People have said surely the bed moves as the van moves. I guess it does but it’s not something I’ve noticed. The only issue we have with the bed is getting sheets to fit. We have a super kingsize bed at home and sheets simply go nowhere near on this bed. Because it’s made from 3 mattresses I have 3 single sheets on it. That deals with the width (just), but even then the sheets keep pinging off as it’s longer than a UK bed. One day I’ll buy some flat sheets, but off course that is money. The second spare bed is also too large for our super king size sheets, maybe Germans have big beds.
