These figures are to help anyone who may be planning a similar trip (as well as those who are just interested). If you are planning a similar trip I am happy to share more figures and some of the details of the planning we did.

Cost of campsites

  • Total cost of campsites – £2268
    • Cheapest – €0 (incl toilets, electricity, clean and dirty water, 4 people, fantastic views)
    • Dearest – €42 (toilet block with showers, swimming pool (not used), cafe & shop, no view unless you count looking at the next van, but shaded amongst trees)
  • Average by country (approx)

    • Portugal – £10 (this is where we had the cheapest and the dearest sites)

Expenses

  • Motorhome Repairs and bits and bobs – £915 (brakes, new door handle, new leisure battery, new cooker hinges, blown aircon that tripped van electrics. Also includes practical bits for the van e.g. buckets)
  • Eating out – way too much
  • Entertainment – we basically don’t go in places that cost
  • Ferry – £811
  • Food – Big item – if you’re planning a similar trip I can let you have this figure
  • Internet and mobile – £505 I was using about 1GB each working day and spending about 1000 minutes on phone calls a month
  • ASCI card and international camping card – the ASCI card was used a lot, the international camping card was never used
  • LPG – gas for heating and cooking – £156
  • MOT – £50
  • Habitation check (and some fixes ) – £120
  • Diesel – £943

  • Travel insurance for 1 year cover – approx £570
  • Motor insurance for 1 year cover – £560 (make sure if you buy this you get one to cover all the months you will be away, there are specialist companies)
