Youlgreave (Bakewell – Peaks)
· England
Lets face it, you know the Peak district will be nice. Another camping and caravan site tucked miles down a single track road, its remoteness in the peaks makes it a top English location for me. The site was walking distance from the village with its three pubs, veggie cafe and shop which gave the site another plus. The walk to the village was along a gorgeous valley which on the odd evening was actually bathed in evening sun. The Peaks are walking territory and given that our walk of the Pennine way is looming, walking is what we did, throwing in a few 18 plus mile walks. Although we had a day off shopping in Bakewell (don’t bother using the Austrian sausage cafe, way overpriced). Yes! me shopping, but we were shopping for new walking coats and walking socks. And a second day we cycled to Chatsworth house and strolled around the gardens. Chatsworth house provides bike racks, so lots of brownie points from us. While here we celebrated our 33rd wedding anniversary with a ride to and walk along Dove Dale. When we did that for our 25 anniversary I was recovering from food poisoning, this time the walk is memorable as it rained from leaving the van though the 2 hour ride to Dovedale, never easing for the 6 mile walk down and back along dovedale and finally turning from heavy rain to positive downpour for the 2 hours cycle back. The weather throughout this stay was wet and cold, roll on the days when we can go back to Europe. Weather aside this was a very good stop and one I may well return to.
