Vienne

· France

A quick stop at Vienne. The aire was in a very busy town centre carpark (only not in the centre) and we didn’t fit in the bays but it did the job for €0. We walked into the town which has quiet a lot of Roman stuff. The walk to town was through scruffy bits and along the busy N7 but the town itself was nice small narrow streets, timber building in a typical french style. The Roman ampitheatre (€2 to enter) was undergoing major works, huge cranes around and not one hard hat in sight. At one time it was one of France’s major ampitheatres but during a religious resurgence, all the theatres were closed and such evil banned so the ampitheatre was plundered for it’s stone. It was totally reconstructed in the 20th century. The Roman odeon next to it is supposed to be reasonably rare. There was also a Roman temple, and a great view point from the top of the hill. Worth a quick stop if you are passing. The Rhone was a large impressive river which I would not like to try kayak down. We decided not to cycle up to Lyon which had vaguely been part of the plan.
