I confess I have not been to the Chilterns before. I say I have done the UK but the first few stops are at places we would normally just pass through. The scenery is gentle rolling hills and lots of woodland, very pleasant. Tring is a small market town having had a market since the 14th century. Some of the Rothchilds used to live here and they have, for instance, given Tring its memorable garden. The garden has a stunning giant redwood and a fountain. I do love a good tree, throw in a fountain and I’m happy. We didn’t do too much in Tring the area, just pleasant walks on the Wendover Arm and the Grand Union Canal, along with cycles through the forest. There seem to be a lot of walking and cycling and giving it is so near to home we may return. Matthew and James joined us for the weekend as we were so close. The site was £20 a night for a field next to the noisy A41. The owners are really nice and the layout is good but the only facilities were a CDP and clean water tap. At this point we don’t want toilet blocks; the less we go “in” places the less risk we take with Sars-Cov-2, but I can’t understand how campsites are now charging £20 a night for so little. The plus side of the site is the constant “shepherds whistle” of the red kites soaring overhead.
