Stage 2 Crowden to Diggle

· Pennine Way

7:30 for breakfast then a quick car ride back to the Pennine way, courtesy of the hotel manager. Like yesterday a gentle start up behind Crowden before staring the ascent up the valley edge with a steep drop to the left, on to Black Hill, like yesterday our heads were in the clouds so no possible views of the surrounding area. It was also a constant drizzle and we were walking into the wind, with a “feel like “ temperature of about 6. Once at the top it was through the peat bogs and hags luckily on nicely pathed paths. This walk was awful before the path was built or so I’ve read. The high point completed we dropped into the lovely Dean Clough valley leaving the clouds but unfortunately not the rain. Luckily the river was easy to ford. In the valley we stopped for a late lunch, it had been too cold on the tops. A climb took us over the A635 and onto Wessenden moor. This was now easy walking (apart from one sneaky climb) passed reservoirs that feed the Huddersfield canal, before coming out on the A62 were our Pennine walk for the day ended, but we now had a disheartening 45mins walk to the hotel. We were not the last back today! We are not meeting many people on the hills, we have them to ourselves.

Windy habour hotel. Small quirky room (uneven floors etc), but friendly staff. Food typical uk pub standard.
