Stage 10 Keld to Bowes
· Pennine Way
Half way! Halfway in terms of days but actually 1.5miles short in term of mapped miles completed. As I said before all our tracking devices give different distances so it’s hard to be precise in terms of miles. Today we also said goodbye to a fellow walker. He decided it was too much, mind you he was carrying his kit, I’d found him a little patronising to me as a woman. Today was a short relatively easy day but my feet are killing me. It started leaving Keld on a gentle climb through a green vale giving way to moors. Suddenly the highest pub in England comes into view and the promise of a drink. The weather was threatening at this point but improved as the day developed. After the pub it’s the boggy moors of Sleightholme for 4 miles of carefully placing your feet to avoid a boot full of bog water. At last firm land of a track and more moors before leaving the main path for the Bowes loop and farm fields. Past Bowes Castle and final to the Ancient Unicorn pub and a chance to rest my feet.
Butt House B&B – great boot room loads of space to dry everything which was needed as we arrived. Nice big bedroom and a bath, but no shower. I had my first bath in about 10 years. This was a walkers place as lots of paths go through Keld and nothing else. We had a nice jolly socialable meal.
