Sperlonga

· Italy

It’s not often clear why you like or dislike a place. This place is now top of my likes for Italian places, along with Dolceacqua (one of our first stops). The place is a seaside resort. We camped in a car park, metered but not charged off season. There were no facilities (clean water or dirty water emptying) so we only stopped one night, we can at a push stretch the toilet to 2 nights. Directly off the car park was the sea so we took the chairs down and ate all our meals on the beach. Sperlonga has two sections; an old hill top town and a flat seaside resort. The old town is well maintained and the plateau at the top has a modern church and square, the whole town has a nice feel to it. The flat road running from the old town is the location of the restaurants to service the sun bathers. As with all Italian coast it’s private beaches all the way along. Even here had an old Roman ruin, this time a villa that was built for Emporor Tiberius. We nearly stopped a second night but decided to move on.
