Saturnia
· Italy
The site was a strange half way house between sosta (car park) and campsite at a cost of €16, showers cost extra. The main attraction is the thermal spa and we spent a very pleasant afternoon floating around absorbing the bad egg smell. On the Sunday we started to cycle to Pitigliano which had read well in a guide book and a friend recommended but due to rain and hail and cold we gave up at our intermediate point of Sovana. After warming ourselves up in a restaurant, (I will not repeat my reply when John suggested we sat on the picnic benches and eat the picnic we had) we wandered around the Etruscan necropolis with it’s various tombs and cava all from about the 2 -3 century BC. Just in time for the cycle home the rain and hail started again. Saturnia itself is a small hill top village typical of the area, but our stroll around it on the day we arrived was ruined by the downpour.
