Ramatuelle (Saint Tropez)

· France

The drive here was not good, lots of busy narrow roads through the mountains, but John was driving and he did a brilliant job. The aire was large, expensive but nicely located not far from the beach and near nothing else. We cycled into Saint Tropez where I thought the film stars sunned themselves on the beach but it was a port not beaches. The port was full of yachts that have no sails, lots of crew and sparkling paint work, one of the smaller yachts only cost a few million. The shops in the narrow streets were all attended by slick door men in suits with eager looking similarly suited women ready to serve. Many of these shops are names you would know and charge obscene prices. A beer in a sea front cafe was €9.90 for 25cl glass (strangely we were to been seen sitting in an Irish pub outside the main area were beer was only €4) . There was a petanque competition going on. Why is this a male pastime, I wonder? Still worth, a visit just take a bottle of water with you if you plan to visit, save you buying anything.
