Pont Du Gard
· France
We stayed on a campsite among the trees and the first spot we had was on a cliff top over looking the river. With ACSI it was €18 + taxes. The site slightly lost some points as due to an “admin error”. We had to move one evening to free the spot for someone else. The trees stopped the sun from getting to the van which when it is down to 3C overnight is not what you want. Pont Du Gard is a Roman aqueduct and bridge over Gardon River. The aqueduct was 50K long taking water from the mountains to the city of Nimes. It is stunning engineering, the huge blocks that make the support structures are so closely cut you have to marvel at what they did. We cycled to Nimes (27k) 2 days on the run where you have a Roman ampitheatre (ruined to some degree by the modern seating). The amount of blood shed in that arena doesn’t bear thinking about and continues today with bull fighting (not sure what sort of bull fighting). The Aqueduct terminates in the city at the fountain gardens which are pretty and on the hill above you have a tower that acts as a modern day view point. Weather has been clear skies, mainly around the 15C sometimes up to 20C but really cold overnight.
