Mont St Michel

National world heritage site. You’ll have seen pictures of it. Since we were last here they have built a new causeway to the island, new car parks and put up new barriers on the river. The barriers are to stop silting around the island, I’m not sure how that works ( may have to google later). The abbey is a fascinating place, (€10 entry) lots of massive rooms in the abbey with loads of little walkways and stairs. One thought while wandering around in the cold; I know these places were built on huge proportions to the glory of God, but if they had made the ceiling lower they would have been easier to keep warm. Lots of stairs which test the ageing knees. In summer it must have been a fantastic place to have been able to wander around at will and a brilliant place for a novice to get lost in. It wasn’t heaving with tourists but busy enough . Had a 3 course lunch at Auberge Saint Pierre which was a standard tourist restaurant, and they didn’t react to two very drowned dripping people entering their restaurant. We cycled there 20 miles (28km) each way, through an onslaught of wind, rain and hail. Not even mad dogs would have cycled in that today.
