Mehring
· Germany
Mehring is in the Mosel valley which many of you will have heard of as it is famous for its wine . Vineyards are all you can see for miles, vines forming ridges down the sides of all the hills. The stellplatz was a nice place directly on the water’s edge (€12 incl electric + metered water). We were able to sit and watch the huge barges and the pleasure craft in comfort.
We picked here as I had read that Trier was a really nice town and it was an easy cycle ride. I really should stop reading lonely planet guide book, it was a town. Mind you we didn’t do it justice as I was not feeling great and therefore spend a while just sat. We walked to the roman bridge which really was not worth the walk, although the walk did go through a dubious district of sex shops and night clubs, and I learnt quite a lot just glancing in the windows. We missed the roman amphitheatre and baths as we ran out of time. The gate was an impressive building. This is the only place I have ever seen paid for bike parking (€2 a bike). It also closed at 17:00. Our bikes got tied to a bike rack further down the road (€0).
