Le Château-d Oléron
· France
So if you are in Ile d’Oléron you will visit this place. It’s a walled city with a strong fortress built 1630 that lasted intact until the allies bombed during the second world war. It has 3 moats and walls around it. It is an impressive fortress, and a lovely town. The fortress had a flock of Black Redstarts, I’ve never seen these before, nice little birds. The port area is full of coloured huts giving it a vibrant look against the ancient walls of the city. In summer this would be a stunningly nice place. The aire we stopped on was much more like a campsite with grass space between the hard standings, once again it has toilet and showers, once again municipal ran and therefore of that standard. The aire is on the sea side, well you have to cross the road, you can’t see the sea from the site, but you can feel the wind, which never stopped in the time we were on the site. I would recommend this place, but maybe better a little more into spring. Alas a lot of the time we were here we were going backwards and forwards to the motorhome repair shop.
