La Selva del Camp

· Spain

La Selva del Camp is a small Spanish town nestled in the hills just up from the Torragona and the coast. It boasts a Roman aqueduct and small portions of Roman town walls, a small park with lots of parrots. Parrots seem to be everywhere here, given that they will have originally been escaped pets they are certainly colonising the area well, they are by far the most dominant bird call I hear. Our aim had been to cycle to Tarragona via a Roman aqueduct. Alas our cycle route took us around some roundabouts that involved motorways and dual carriage ways and we chickened. There was a white route way that added only 30mins. The white road way involved a ford, if that is what you call a river that is 10 meter across and about 0.3 meters deep. We found a 3rd route which included dual carriageways, bridle paths and derelict industrial estates and at last arrived at our way point of the aqueduct. I love these Roman aqueducts, their engineers’ skills were stunning. Having wandered around shooting as many strange angles as I could we decided Tarragona could wait for another day and headed home.

The site was interesting, a purpose built car park type area with services ran by the local police (€5). For access you had to phone the police. We had to wait for access as they were dealing with an incident. Popular little stop those. It’s main motorhome time here so many places are full by 3pm.
