Kampanti fields
· The Gambia
This is an area for seeing raptors. By now we had settled on a guide called Lamin and he did a good day. He’d hired a taxi for us and laid on snacks and drink. One of the fields we walked around was owned by him. This was seeing bits of rural Gambia, inland from the coast. We stopped at one “hide” and had a break and a walk around some fields. Here we were invited into a garden and shown some barn owl chicks in a barn. Some children latched on to us, so we shook hands with all of them and then walked down the lane, a child hanging onto each hand, surrounded by more, until they were called away. It was a 2 hour drive, but we kept stopping and wandering around small holding then onto the next place. At one point the guide stopped in a town at an orange seller’s stall. The car was immediately swamped by your women, dangling their bags of oranges through the window in a frenzy of a needed sale. But once he picked his bag and said no to the rest in typical Gambian style the answer was accepted and everyone stood back.
