We came here for one reason only. That was to meet up with my eldest brother, it’s only about an 1.5 hours from where he lives. We took a gamble as we left Benicàssim that all was going to be fine regarding the virus. Like a lot of people so slow to react. We camped on an expensive (for us – €20) site, stuffed full of Brits, but we had a lovely view of Orange groves directly in front of the van. I had, a now standard argument, this time with a German man (pillock) who seems to think that women cannot direct the reversing of a motorhome.
We walked along the front in Javea which proved a little difficult as it was closed for road works, such a mundane reason. We found a place we could meet my brother in 2 days time. This is little Britain, full English, lunch at 12 noon, no problem and served by a English speaking person from some country of the British Isles. Still the weather was Spanish.
We cycled to Denia, where my parents once spent 3 months and my cousin’s family may or may not live. We stopped our bikes on the harbour wall and took in the view capturing it on a camera. I very foolishly checked the news – something I got a little obsessed with. Headline – “Spain declares a state of Emergency” We continued our stroll around Denia rather half heartedly, it was 16:30 and we were about 1 hours cycle ride away from the van. Once back at the site the rumours (many true) were echoing from unit to unit. We joined the queue to pay our bill so we could leave first thing in the morning. The campsite owner looked sick (not ill sick). This is a really busy time on campsites and from midnight all sites, restaurants, bars, beaches etc were to close. Just for clarity we could stay on the site but we would not be allowed back in if we left. In the morning we joined the queue leaving the site, and the “caravan” of units trudging up the motorway, hoping that the rumours of road and border closures where false.
I never did get to see my brother and his partner…..
Denia Square in Denia the day state if alarm was declared. Note the bar is still open. It all changed the next day. Sea front in Javea Denia
