Honfleur
· France
I’ve very mixed feelings on this stop. The aire is a massive motorhome carpark, holding 140 vans. It means that constantly there is the noise of vans arriving and leaving, the gap between the vans isn’t really big enough for chairs and tables. We did get a spot that looked over a marina and we had room in front of the van to sit. I’ll ignore the bins we also overlooked. Honfleur is one of those tourist traps, understandably so. It is set on a series of river inlets and harbours where those with money park their boats (along with the odd local fishing boat). Pleasure boats run regular trips from the harbour, but as normal I winced at the price and so we will never see the Normandy Bridge from the river (well not this visit). Normandy Bridge by the way makes anything we have in the UK look tiny. The streets are cobbled and Honfleur boasts the largest wooden church in France. It was an impressive double-naved church. We sought out some little back garden in the winding streets and did the main gardens on the sea front. We enjoyed a restaurant one lunch time, the restaurant we had chosen had the best review of those on the harbour front. I didn’t enjoy the after effects of the food and returned early to the van to be near the loo and sleep. We’d planned to spend Easter weekend here, Easter is a busy weekend in aires I was concerned if we moved we would not get a spot an the next aire. However Honfleur only allows you to stop 3 nights so we moved on Easter Saturday. I’m sure we could have done a lot more here, in fact I’d created a list of things to do over the 4 days but on we move.
