Heudicourt (Lake Medine)
· France
This is by a lake, it’s a strange place, we seem to be in the middle of a big area for camping and gites. It is 7 euros for a place without electricity and 14 with. We have loads of gas left so we stayed off-grid. I was concerned about our 4 tonne van in all the mud, particularly seeing all the churned up track marks on the pitches. There are toilet blocks scattered here and there. There are large functional buildings around, but I’m really not sure what function these buildings have. One building looked a bit like a closed hotel, but actually had someone in bed in the only room that looked used and was lit. We limped to the bird hide and looked at the mute swans. The signs promise all sorts of sightings but swans were our lot. In the evening I played an online game with Matt and Anya while John increased his stress levels by watching England scrape a win. The full day we were here we cycled the short 20K around the lake, we didn’t have any lunch food in so we decided to buy food, we are a bit short of money at the moment but given the tourist nature of this lake I was convinced we get something at a reasonable price. I have written these words before , but where is all this nice french food? The only place we found open sold hot dogs, even the English don’t ruin hot dogs, it’s junk food, filled with sugar and salt to make you want more, this was cold and disgusting, I wished I’d stayed with the nuts and lettuce we had in the van. The main lake area is full of play things for adults and children alike, big water inflatables, high ropes, bike hire etc. It is obviously a popular place in summer. Talking of summer, the sun did manage to make an appearance in the afternoon, but we are back to long trousers and jumpers! The only rain that fell while we were out was while we studied the swans from the bird hide. We did manage to spot a whole array of other birds, terns, swans, coots and wagtail, we managed to not get very excited by these sightings. But was that a purple heron that flew past? If it was, I’m excited! And even more exciting was the otter, but probably a mink as you could see it’s back.
