Heidelberg
· Germany
This is our third trip to Heidelberg. This time we stopped at Matthew and Anya’s flat, which meant we could cook meals and generally keep the cost down. Heidelberg is nice city. It was about minus 5 when we where there, and cost was an issue. We mainly did walking, up the hills, which are very steep and tree covered. Matt and Anya work at the top of one of these hills in the middle of the forest at the Max Plank institute, what a wonderful place to work. On the top of one hill (opposite side to Max Plank) is the Heidelberg Thingstätte a massive open air theatre built by Hitler for his rallies, an impressive place, hard to understand how it could be filled with Hitler supporters but I just so happened to listen to a podcast on the topic while I was out there. Hopefully we have learnt our lessons but I think Brexit and Trump shows we have not. Slightly above that a ruined a church, a place of god, enough said really. We also went to Schwetzingen Palace and into Mannheim and the palace there, a particularly nice palace and worth a visit if you are in the area. It was a lovely week. It will not be long before we are back
