Freudenstadt

· Germany

On a pleasant balmy night, the time around 11pm, we sat under the stars watching for satellites and shooting stars. Children (Spanish) were playing hide and seek, torches were flashing as they look for the hiders. There was a soft murmur of voices from motorhomes around, with the odd clink as one set of inhabitants washes their dishes. Life was sweet, and believe it or not we were sat in a swimming pool cum school car park (€0). (Think rec centre for those of you from St Ives, Cambs). The car park had the normal motor homes services, clean water, grey and black water disposal.

Freudenstadt is like many German towns we have seen so far, modern but with a very nice central square with a large fountain that doubles as a play ground. We are still in cycling and walking country so we cycled to lake Nagoldtalsperre, had a swim and watched a wind band at a fires service fete that was in full swing. The fete seemed to be 1 fire engine, a wind band (good sound) and a huge beer tent, these Germans have their priorities.

The next day we used the outdoor swimming pool, I decided against paying for the indoor pool and the fun of the slides. When did I get so old and sensible (cost being the deciding factor)? The outdoor swimming pool is on a hill top and over looks the wide vista of the valleys beyond, it’s getting a lot flatter now with shallow valleys against a back drop of low hills. Of course flatter and cooler weather means we have exhausted our excuses for not running, which was our final activity, incredibly hard after weeks of not running.
