We stayed in a Best Western hotel. I saw an advert, 2 nights for the price of 1, including breakfast, it worked out much cheaper than the deal at the Premier Inn the month before and it was much better quality. Funny really, it was still just a room, but little things made it much better.
The day we travelled down we went into Margate, bit of a dump really and the cold drizzly day didn’t help me to think otherwise. We had some “food” in a pub, OK i confess a “spoons”. Normally we avoid “spoons” but I have to admit it was cheap. I’ll not rush back though, the politics of “spoons” bothers me. In the evening we walked around the cathedral square in the rain.
Day 2 the rain continued to fall. We had found the free museum but had not allowed for Monday closing so we paid our dues and went into a Roman museum. All the normal roman stuff, they had a set square, I want one, a Roman one that is. Can you believe the Romans had such things! The rain still fell so we paid for the cathedral. This trip was starting to add up. The entrance to the cathedral cost more than the hotel, well almost. What I hadn’t realised was that you can’t even see the cathedral without paying money, it’s hidden behind a very high wall. I’m not sure how we got into the gardens last night. I’ve always objected to paying to going into churches but anyway pay we did. We looked at all the priceless silver and goldware in the crypt, admired the stone carvings, the gold guilt and the like and then left the square almost tripping over the homeless people in doorways just outside the cathedral. Sometimes I wonder why I fell out with the church! We returned to the cathedal for evensong. I love evensong and the girl choir was very good, with some interesting adult voices singing through. Shame about the begging for money that they did in the service with some (what I assume were) slightly misleading figures banded around of how much it costs to run that place.
Day 3 took us to Reculver for a walk along the coast, not much rain, but a very cold wind! We looked at the ruined church and I realised I’ve been mixing my ruins, I thought this one was on the Anglian coast.
A pleasant little stay.
