Cambrils
· Spain
Cambrils is a popular Spanish seaside resort. My Spanish teacher came here in her childhood for her summer holidays and talked with fondness about it in our lesson. That’s assuming I followed what she was saying. John and I passed through Cambrils a few years ago so we knew the town a little. The sea front is laid extensively to restaurants and we ate in one to celebrate John’s birthday, only a few days after his birthday. We wandered around the seafront and along the long promenade towards the next town. After two hours of walking we had not run out of promenade nor blocks of holiday flats. One day we cycled up into the hills to a reservoir, Presa de Riudecanyes, which was worryingly empty for the end of winter. I had read Spain’s reservoirs are lower than normal. Spanish know how to do hills and we had a rather enjoyable little cycle, taking in a couple of small towns along the way. The campsite (€20 with ACSI) was OK, showers were hot and the cubicles were large, what more can you want. The swimming was closed but then as the weather keeps reminding us, it is still winter. The campsite supermarket sold out of date goods at inflated prices. Of course getting the van on the services required careful negotiations as did getting the van on the pitch. We fitted if we had the van at an angle with a centimetre to spare against the low branch. If the branches had been higher we would have got in no problem. We paid for a campsite to have electrics. Best plans and all that, the hassled looking electrician I think is a permanent feature on this site.
