Bilbao

· Spain

Some places you just like for no real reason. Bilbao is a lively city, with an old town of meandering small streets and squares and a larger new town of modern buildings, shops and museums. At night the old town small streets were filled with groups of young adults sitting on the floor drinking and smoking (didn’t always smell like tobacco) but all seemed to be friendly and inviting. There was a band in the square but alas that started after these weary travellers decided enough for the day, it was the day we had just landed in Spain. There are a lot of gardens and squares so although you are in a reasonably sized city, you can escape to quiet, flowers, river and views easily. The bars all sell pintxos, which are mainly small pieces of bread with something on top like a piece of cheese or a roll of ham. Piled up on the bar tops these look 100% appealing and taste like a piece of bread and cheese (or whatever you choose) and leave you much lighter in the purse.

The “site” was typical Spanish, somewhere between a campsite and a car park, perched on the hill overlooking the city, so it had great views. 15€ for pitch and electric, services and toilets.
