This is still Roman history land, close to Hadrians Wall. We haven’t moved far from out last stop as we are staying in the area to meet some friends but it is surprising how different a short move can be. We are no longer on wild purple moors but rolling ploughed fields, much more sheltered. The campsite (£25/night) was a mid sized site with too many rules (no cycling on site! REALLY) The only view is that of the neighbours caravan. It was nicely set in woodland though so with careful angling of the van we were able to watch the nuthatch and tree creepers.
Bertie at some point has an issue on every trip, it’s part of life in a motorhome. Strange noises in the middle of the night proved to be from the solar panel. It took us 1.5 hours to trace, stood outside the van in pyjamas on a cold, but moonlit night listening to the animals in the woods and the owls hooting. Very pleasant night but I’d rather not spend my time looking for issues.
We have joined the English Heritage and so doing all the Roman ruins has become our thing to do. Chesters fort with the best preserved roman baths and Corbridge roman town were therefore on the trip along with Aydon medieval castle. All had something to excite the imagination.
The highlight of the stop was a cafe crawl with two past friends of mine from polytechnic, we hadn’t seen them for about 30 years. One advantage of travelling is you get to met people who live too far away.
